77 Young People Graduate from Vocational Training
By Initiative for the Needy ·

On 11 February 2025, Initiative for the Needy Charity Organization celebrated a milestone for youth in Kiambu County as 77 young people from vulnerable backgrounds officially completed and graduated from intensive vocational training.
Conducted in close partnership with the Kenya Institute of Software Engineering (KISSE) College, this program was designed to bridge the gap between formal education and real-world economic opportunity for youth across Thika, Juja, and surrounding communities.
Expanding Opportunity: Practical Skills for Real Livelihoods
For many young people facing socio-economic barriers, conventional tertiary education can feel out of reach. This vocational scholarship initiative provided fully sponsored, practical training tracks across multiple market-demand fields:
- Plumbing and Pipe Fitting: Hands-on technical skills for water supply installation, repairs, and community infrastructure maintenance.
- Baking and Pastry Arts: Commercial food preparation, hygiene standards, recipe mastery, and catering operations.
- Hairdressing and Beauty Therapy: Modern styling, salon hygiene, client care, and personal care entrepreneurship.
- Tailoring and Garment Design: Pattern making, industrial machine operation, and garment construction.
- Basic Computing and Digital Literacy: Essential digital skills to help trainees manage invoices, customer inquiries, and online promotion.
Each course was structured to equip students not only with manual craft skills, but also with basic financial literacy, customer relations, and business ethics.
Why Vocational Training Matters in Our Community
In informal settlements and peri-urban neighborhoods across Thika—such as Kiandutu and Kiganjo—youth often encounter steep obstacles, including lack of school fees, unemployment, and limited mentorship.
Without viable paths to income, talented young people risk getting trapped in cycles of poverty. By providing direct vocational training, Initiative for the Needy seeks to transform potential into self-reliance.
"True charity goes beyond temporary relief. When we put practical tools and marketable skills into the hands of a young person, we are not just helping them survive today—we are restoring their dignity, building their self-esteem, and enabling them to provide for their families for a lifetime."

Beyond the Classroom: Mentorship and Entrepreneurship
Graduation day was not the end of the journey; it was the launchpad. Throughout the program, trainees participated in mentorship circles that addressed:
- Self-Esteem and Mindset: Overcoming stigma and building confidence as skilled trade professionals.
- Bookkeeping and Budgeting: Understanding costs, setting competitive pricing, and saving earnings.
- Small Business Setup: How to form working partnerships, register micro-enterprises, and access community revolving funds.
Several graduates from the bakery and hairdressing classes have already formed cooperative working groups to share equipment and take on commercial orders in Thika.
What Lies Ahead: Equipment and Startup Support
To ensure these 77 graduates successfully transition into income-generating livelihoods, Initiative for the Needy is currently working with community partners and well-wishers to provide starter toolkits:
- Basic tool sets for plumbing graduates (wrenches, threaders, cutters)
- Starter salon kits (hairdryers, shears, styling accessories)
- Baking starter packages (mixers, pans, and essential ingredients)
Equipping graduates with their first set of tools drastically reduces the initial capital barrier, enabling them to start earning from day one.
